We are lucky to have an archive of several hundred letters from Guisborough Hospital and Guisborough Grammar School. Our earliest letter was written in the sixteenth century and signed by Robert Pursglove himself (right), and our general collection of letters goes back to 1710.

Correspondence of Guisborough Hospital
Our collection of letters from Guisborough Hospital dates from between 1710 and 1870. Click the links to access the letters for a particular range of dates.
These letters represent incoming correspondence only. Some organisations kept letter books, in which they recorded copies of the letters they sent. The Wardens of Guisborough Hospital do not appear to have done this.
This collection has a very few copies of outgoing correspondence, such as ZJB 7-2-4, which concerns the end of Robert Frankland's time at the school due to his mental ill health (Frankland was confined to a lunatic asylum near York). These copies are in the minority, however, and it seems that most everyday correspondence was not considered important enough to copy.
